This Austrian M1870 was made by Steyr for the Werndl Rifle.

This bayonet is similar to the Austrian M1867 sword bayonet but has had the finial removed from the muzzle-ring and a screw-lock mechanism added. The M1870 is designated “short” as its blade has been shortened by roughly 10 cm from the earlier 1867 model.

The 47cm yataghan blade is in excellent condition and has a single fuller on both sides. It is marked at the ricasso with the Austrian eagle, Steyr logo “OEWG” and an inspection stamp. An additional mark is visible and looks to be “WN” for Waffenfabrik Neuhausen. The hooked quillion is stamped with what could be a unit marking of which only “111” and what looks like the letter “T” are legible.

The black pressed-leather grips are in excellent condition and the external spring locking mechanism works perfectly.

The bayonet fits loosely in the scabbard and the scabbard is without dents or scuffs and retains most of its original finish.

This is a rare and desirable bayonet in excellent condition.
