Jonathan Howell made this beautifully finished root-ball with horn ferrule sword cane. Jonathan Howell was a prestigious 19th Century British walking stick maker. The silver collar bears the JH maker’s mark and the Birmingham hallmark dates it to 1912.

The cane has a 602mm blade that tapers to a bodkin point. The blade is clean and bright with only very mild spots of tarnish that will polish out.

The cane is in excellent condition with minor age related wear. The horn ferrule has scuffs and wear consistent with use. The leather bumper at the base of the blade is intact but the leather has perished. The blade sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the body of the cane without rattle or play.

This is a fine example of a high status country gent’s sword cane from the early 20th Century.
