Fine example of an iconic, Napoleonic Wars 1796 Light Cavalry Officer’s Sabre.

The 820mm curved blade has a flat spine and wide, shallow fuller and terminates in a hatchet point. The blade is engraved on one side with trophies of arms, floral motifs, George III Royal cypher and the bust of a cavalryman. The obverse is engraved with additional trophies of arms and floral motifs, a horsed cavalryman, the coat of arms and motto of the Royal Family.

The blade retains its fighting edge and has seen action, as evidenced by the edge-to-edge nicks. The blade is mostly bright with some age related tarnish.

The sabre has an unusual, faceted guard, collar and back strap. The ridged wooden grip retains most of its leather wrap and the twisted wire is intact.

The sabre is complete with its steel scabbard, which is in overall excellent condition with only mild age related tarnish and a couple of minor dents. The suspension rings have been removed.

The sword sheaths and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.

I have not been able to read a maker’s name under the languets, but the faceted hilt, small, slightly back facing ears on the grip and the shield shaped languets may assist with identifying the maker.
