American M1917 bayonet and leather scabbard in very good condition, identical to the British P1913 bayonet but for use on the American issue .30 calibre rifle.

The 43cm single edged blade has a deep single fuller on both sides and a rounded spine. The blade is in very good condition and is marked on the ricasso with the American ordnance “flaming grenade” mark over “US,” a bend test “X” and a bald eagle head over “J25.” The obverse ricasso is marked with the pattern date “1917” and Winchester’s mark, a circle containing a “W.”

The hilt has wooden grip scales with two grooves which are firmly in place and show minimal wear. The straight cross guard with muzzle ring are un-marked. The steel pommel is clean and bright and the press stud locking mechanism works perfectly.

The leather scabbard is a 1st pattern “Maxim” Scabbard with steel mounts and is in excellent condition, retaining its olive drab colouring. The throat of the scabbard is unit marked “3.40.E” over “62” and the steel chape is stamped with an oval cartouche containing the letters “GF.” This pattern of scabbard was discontinued in late 1917 and is rare.
