This is an original WW1 American Model 1917 Bolo knife. M1917 Bolo knives were issued initially to the medical corps and following that, to machine gun crews. The M1917 was designed for clearing ground for erecting hospital tents and by machine gun crews to clear gun emplacements and open up fields of fire. M1917 Bolo knives were manufactured privately during WW1 under US government contracts. This knife was produced in 1918 by Plumb of St. Louis.
The 259mm bolo blade has a thick, flat spine and tapers to a spear point. The blade is double-edged for the last 70mm. The single-edged blade is flat on one side and convex on the other and swells to 53mm at its widest. The blade is in very good original condition and retains most of its black finish with minimal wear considering its age and use.
The ricasso is stamped “U.S Mod 1917 C.T” although the US is partially struck and reads JS. The obverse ricasso is stamped “Plumb St. Louis 1918.”
The contoured walnut grip scales are in good condition with age appropriate wear. The scales are fixed firmly in place by two screws. The blackened steel dove–head pommel and shaped cross-guard are in good condition.
The knife is complete with its original webbing and leather scabbard. The scabbard is in excellent condition, retaining its webbing and wire belt attachment. The stitching is intact and tight and the leather is stamped “A-K-CO 1918 BJ.H.S.” The scabbard throat and lining are intact and in excellent condition. The knife sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.
This is an original World War One American bolo knife in fantastic condition for its 102 years of age and service.
