This is a WW2 period Russian M1942 dragoon shashka. At the beginning of WW2, the Red Army was predominantly mechanised, but most of its equipment was lost during the German invasion of June 1941. Hardy Cossack ponies were used to make up the transport shortfall and compensate for shortages of oil. Mounted infantry (dragoons), armed with these shashka and Mosin Nagant rifles were used as strike forces in the Battle of Moscow and elsewhere on the Russian front.
The 815mm single-edged blade has a flat spine with an upper false edge and terminates in a hatchet point. The blade has a broad single fuller on each side and is in good condition with a wootz-like pattern to the steel. The edge remains very sharp.
The ricasso is stamped with a circular makers’ mark, the letter H over 5 and a tiny inspection mark. The obverse ricasso bears the Soviet hammer & Sickle within an oval, the letter W over III and the serial number 7081.
The brass ferrule at the front of the wooden grip is also stamped with the serial number 7081 and the letter W over III. The hardwood grip has deep diagonal grooves and is in very good condition. The beaked and eared pommel is in good condition and bears the C.C.C.P, double-headed eagle and starred hammer and sickle markings of the Soviet Union. The blade is firm in the hilt.
The shashka is complete with its olive drab painted wooden scabbard with brass mounts and Model 1891/30 Mosin Nagant bayonet. The sword was worn in a scabbard suspended with the edge uppermost. The scabbard is in very good condition and the sword sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within.
This is a good example of a rare Soviet WW2 shashka, one of the last sword patterns to see combat service.
