This high-quality, Meiji period (1868-1912) aikuchi dagger was probably an export piece. During the late 19th Century, a ban on Samurai wearing their swords led to a dramatic reduction in the workload and income of the traditional blade smiths. To supplement their income, these smiths took advantage of the growing demand for Samurai-related articles by collectors in the western world.

The 162mm single-edged blade was traditionally forged and then oil quenched. The blade is in very good condition and remains very sharp. The copper blade collar (habaki) has a rainfall pattern and the blade is held firmly within the hilt. I have not attempted to remove the blade as they are rarely signed.

The scabbard and hilt are made of sika antler (a deer native to Japan) and are beautifully carved with a village scene showing two Samurai men. The carving is of excellent quality. The hilt and scabbard have a great patina and are in excellent condition. The blade sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.
