This is a great example of a Zulu Iklwa with a broad, leaf-shaped blade and moderate flare to the end of the haft. Many Zulu weapons, like this one, were collected by the British troops and brought back to the UK as souvenirs after the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879.

The 295mm blade has a raised medial ridge. The blade is 51mm at its widest and is in good condition with some pitting on the point and a great patina that adds to its character.

While the Zulu King was responsible for providing his warriors with shields, the individual Zulu warrior was responsible for his own weaponry. Given the broadness of the blade, and the length of the haft, this iklwa was probably the property of an experienced older warrior, one that would have fought as part of the centre (the boss of the horns) in the Zulu bulls-head attack formation.

The blade is secured firmly within the haft with plant-based resin and woven wire was added to strengthen the bond. The wire is in very good condition. A second band of woven wire sits below the first. Decorative flourishes were used to distinguish the owners iklwa from others. The blade is firm in the haft.

The haft has a moderate flare to the end and a wonderful patina. The total length of the iklwa is just over 56 inches/143cm. A longer haft was needed to balance the weight of the blade. The balance point being a hand-and-a-half from the lower ring of wire.

This excellent 19th Century Iklwa will make a superb addition to any Anglo-Zulu War collection.
