This is a great example of a Zulu Iklwa. The style of the blade suggests that it pre-dates the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. Many Zulu weapons were collected by the British troops and brought back to the UK as souvenirs after the Anglo-Zulu War.

The 265mm traditionally forged blade has a raised medial ridge. The blade is 30mm at its widest and is in good condition with a great patina that adds to its character.

The blade is secured firmly within the haft and hide, probably from a cow tail was used to strengthen the bond. Woven wire was added above and below the hide to further reinforce the spear and personalise the weapon, making it easier for the warrior to identify his property.

The haft has a wonderful patina and a large flare at the end that has been rounded and decoratively incised. The total length of the iklwa is 48 inches/122cm

This excellent mid-19th Century Iklwa will make a superb addition to any Anglo-Zulu War collection.
