This US WW1 1917 Pattern bayonet for the Enfield .30 calibre rifle is in mint, unissued condition.
The mint 433 mm blade has a deep single fuller on both sides and a rounded spine. The point is needle sharp and the blade has its factory edge with no additional attempts at sharpening.
The blued ricasso is stamped with the pattern date of 1917 and the Remington maker's mark. The obverse ricasso bears the flaming grenade over US ordnance stamp, the eagle, bend test and inspection stamps. The cross guard and pommel retain their original blueing and the wooden hilt scales are unmarked. The press-stud locking mechanism works perfectly. There are traces of minor rust on the cross guard and pommel.
The bayonet is complete with its original green leather scabbard, which is also in near mint condition. The throat and chape retain their original blueing with minor rust and the green leather is firm and undamaged with the stitching intact and strong.
The scabbard is stamped "Jewell 1918" and "H.E." The scabbard's steel throat and chape are stamped "M.S."
This P1917 bayonet and scabbard are in as close to mint condition as it is possible to find, making it a very rare example of a relatively common bayonet.
