This Brazilian 1908 pattern bayonet was made in Suhl, Germany by the firm of Simson & Co. under contract to the Brazilian government. The bayonet was used with the German made M1908 7mm Mauser rifle, (a close copy of the German Gewehr 98 rifle) adopted by Brazil in 1908.
The 300mm single-edged blade has a flat spine above a long single fuller and terminates in a spear point. The spine is stamped with the letters RB within an oval. The blade has a service sharpened edge and is in good condition with a few small patches of shallow pitting and a couple of isolated spots of deeper pitting on the spine. The ricasso is stamped with the makers’ details, Simson & Co. Suhl.
The polished crosspiece has a hooked quillon with flattened ball finial. The cross piece is stamped with the serial number of the rifle with which it was issued. The polished steel pommel is on good condition and the press stud mechanism is crisp and in perfect order. The wooden grip scales have some age and use related wear and are held firmly in place by two steel rivets.
The bayonet is complete with its black leather scabbard with blued steel locket and chape. The scabbard is in very good condition and the bayonet sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within.
This is a good example of a German made Brazilian 1908 pattern bayonet.
