This 1853 pattern bayonet has been adapted for use with the Martini-Henry rifle. The muzzle ring diameter, formerly 20mm has been bushed down to 18mm. The bushed 1853 pattern was entered into the List of Changes in December 1872 and the “new” bayonet is sometimes referred to as the P1853/72.
This example was made by Reeves, of Birmingham, England.
The 437mm triangular blade has three, deep fullers running almost the full length of the blade. The forte of the face of the blade bears the worn maker’s name, REEVES and a faint Birmingham factory stamp. The blade is also stamped with the letter, E and the conversion date, /73. The issue number, 543 is also stamped on the forte. The blade is in good condition, with patches of cleaned pitting.
The blackened socket is in good condition and has a length of 76mm. The locking ring is complete and in good working order. The back of the socket bears a conversion/inspection stamp.
The bayonet is complete with its matching numbered black leather scabbard with brass locket and chape. The scabbard is of the intermediate (2nd) type that was made and issued between 1860 and 1866. The scabbard is in great condition and the stitching is intact and tight. The frog stud bears the issue number 543 and the leather is stamped with the Broad Arrow and WD mark. The bayonet sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.
This is a good example of a British 1853 pattern bayonet, later bushed for use with the Martini-Henry rifle.
