The 1871 pattern naval cutlass bayonet was a re-work of the 1859 pattern. The muzzle ring diameter was reduced to 18mm for use with the Martini-Henry rifle. The blade was straightened, thinned and shortened and the guard was thinned to lighten it. All P1871 cutlass bayonets were made by re-working existing 1859 pattern models. The conversions were carried out at the Enfield factory, commencing in 1875.

This example is one of the early conversions, with a faint conversion date of June 1875. Only 50,710 1871 pattern cutlass bayonet were produced.

The 652mm blade has a flat spine, narrowing to a 240mm double-edge. The blade terminates in a spear point. The spine is stamped with an R & W, Birmingham and an Enfield factory inspection marks and the letter, N, denoting naval use.

The ricasso is deeply stamped with the letter N and faint traces of the earlier marks. The WD and broad arrow, a factory inspection mark and the conversion date of 6 ‘75 are very faint as these were ground off during the conversion process.

The blade is in good condition with a service sharpened edge and use-related knicks. The steel has a pale, speckled patina.

The symmetrical sheet stell bowl guard is in good condition with a pleasing patina and minor use-related dings and marks. The knurled leather grip scales have use-related wear and are held firmly in place by the rivets. The pommel is stamped with the number 5 and the front of the mortice slot bears the letter N and an Enfield factory mark. The press-stud locking catch is in good working order.

The cutlass bayonet is complete with its black leather scabbard with steel locket and chape. The locket and chape have a pale patina and are in good condition. The leather is in good condition and the stitching is intact. The cutlass sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.

This is a good example of a scarce 1871 pattern Martini-Henry rifle cutlass bayonet.
