British volunteer pattern 1888 Mk II Lee Metford rifle bayonet made commercially, circa 1899.

This desirable bayonet is in excellent condition for its 126 years of age and is highly collectable. The 305mm double-edged blade is without maker details or government ownership stamps – as to be expected on a commercially produced, volunteer pattern bayonet. The blade is in great condition.

The wooden grip is firm and in excellent condition with two brass rivets. The steel crosspiece and pommel are bright and free from rust. The front of the crosspiece is stamped with the letter L, and the spine of the tang bears the numeral 2. The press-stud locking mechanism is in good working order.

The bayonet is complete with its volunteer pattern black leather scabbard with blued steel mounts. The black leather is in good condition, retaining most of its original finish. The stitching is intact and firm. The bayonet sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.

This is a great example of the iconic British Boer War and Boxer Rebellion bayonet made for the commercial or volunteer market.
