Rare pre-World War One Hooked Quillon bayonet made by the Wilkinson Sword Company in August 1909.
The 432mm, single edged blade has a long narrow fuller and rounded spine. The blade retains its factory sharpened edge and is bright and clean. The blade is in very good condition.
The ricasso retains its original blueing and is marked with the crowned cypher of Edward VII over the pattern date 1907 and the date of manufacture 8 ‘09 below which is stamped WILKINSON. The ricasso is also stamped with two faint Enfield inspection marks and the re-issue date of 1911. The obverse ricasso bears the War Department broad arrow, bend test stamp and three Enfield inspection and acceptance stamps.
The hooked quilloned crosspiece and birds’ beak pommel retain their original blueing. The wooden grip scales are in good condition with age and use-related marks and colouration. The scales are held firmly in place by the two original screws. The push button locking mechanism is in good condition and the action is crisp.
The bayonet is complete with its black leather scabbard with a teardrop stud. The scabbard is fitted with a brown 1939 pattern leather frog, suggesting that the bayonet was re-issued for Home Guard use during WW2. The scabbard and frog are in very good condition. The leather and stitching are strong. The bayonet’s locket and chape retain their original blackened finish. The chape is stamped with a Broad Arrow and inspection mark. The bayonet sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.
This is a very good example of the iconic and rare British hooked quillon P1907 bayonet.
