This rare Mk1 Canadian Ross Rifle bayonet was made by the Ross Rifle Company, Quebec in March 1910 and is in excellent condition. The Mk1 bayonet differs from later models by having an extended muzzle ring containing a split spring to aid in securely attaching the bayonet to the muzzle of the rifle. Mk1 Bayonets also had a pin through the pommel.

During WW1, the U.S. Government purchased 20,000 Ross rifles and bayonets from Canada. These bayonets were marked with "U.S." and the "flaming bomb" acceptance mark. This bayonet and scabbard were both accepted into U.S. Army service.

The 256mm single-edged, un-fullered blade has a rounded spine and terminates in its original hatchet or “Butchers knife” point. The blade is clean and bright and retains its service edge. The ricasso retains most of its original blueing.

The steel crosspiece and pommel retain their blueing. The pommel bears the maker’s logo,” ROSS RIFLE CO. / QUEBEC / PATENTED 1907” and the obverse bears an acceptance/inspection mark, the pattern date, ’08 (1808), the Canadian Government Ownership Mark, a broad arrow in a circle and the manufacture date of March 1910. The additional securing pin is located to the upper rear of the press-stud. The bayonet attachment mechanism works perfectly. The grip spine bears two Canadian inspection stamps and the underside of the pommel is stamped with unit markings.

The wooden grip scales show age related wear and staining and are in good condition. The scales are marked on both sides with Canadian inspection stamps, an issue number, F531. Over stamping these are the American ownership, US and “flaming bomb” stamps.

The bayonet is complete with its original Mk1 leather scabbard and stitched on frog. The scabbard is in good condition with wear to the leather commensurate with age. The stitching is intact and strong. The tip of the scabbard has a steel button, bearing a Canadian inspection stamp. The steel throat of the scabbard bears the unit markings, CPASC, a weapon/issue number and a Canadian inspection stamp.

This rare first pattern Canadian bayonet in excellent condition and all original. Many Ross bayonets had their blade profile altered during World War 1 to give them a sharper point. This example is exactly as it left the Ross Rifle Co. factory in 1910.
