This scarce Danish M1889 knife bayonet was made in 1891 by Alex Coppel in Germany.

The 230mm single-edged blade has a single fuller below a flat spine and terminates in a double-edged spear point. The blade is in good condition and retains a fighting edge.

The ricasso is stamped with the maker’s mark of Alex Coppel, Solingen. Early examples of the M1889 bayonet were made in Germany, with Danish production beginning in 1900 at their Copenhagen factory.

The bolster of the grip is stamped with the Danish crowned ownership mark and the acceptance date ’91. The knurled grip scales are held firmly in place by two rivets. The pommel is stamped with the serial number 36025 (probably corresponding to a rifle with the same serial number). The obverse of the pommel is stamped with the unit designation; 9 R. 2368. An earlier designation has been polished out and over-stamped. The locking mechanism is in good working order.

The bayonet is complete with its steel mounted leather scabbard. The locket and chape are in good condition and the retaining catch on the locket works well. The ball finial of the chape is stamped with a Danish crown ownership mark. The leather is in good condition and the stitching is intact and tight. The bayonet sheathes and draws smoothly and locks firmly within the scabbard.

This is a great example of an early, German-made, Danish M1889 Krag-Jorgensen rifle bayonet.
