This French model 1866 yataghan bayonet was made at the St. Etienne armoury in 1871.

The 575mm yataghan blade is in very good condition with one small nick to the service sharpened edge. The spine engraving is worn but it is still easy to make out the arsenal name and date of manufacture; St. Etienne, March 1871. The ricasso bears two French inspection poincon and the obverse bears another, partly concealed stamp showing the numeral 7.

The iron cross-piece is stamped with the serial number of the Chassepot rifled musket that the bayonet was issued with. The serial number, S 57385 matches that of the scabbard. The hooked quillon has a small patch cleaned corrosion and bears inspection poincon.

The front of the cross-piece bears numerous additional stamps consisting of numerals and symbols.

The brass hilt is in excellent condition and the press stud and external spring mechanism work perfectly.

The bayonet is complete with its blackened steel scabbard. The scabbard is in very good condition. The top of the scabbard bears a matching serial number, S 57385, indicating that the bayonet and scabbard have been together since production 155 years ago.

This is a great example of the iconic French Chassepot bayonet complete with matching numbered scabbard.
