This ersatz bayonet was made in Germany in the early years of WW1. The height of ersatz bayonet manufacturing was between 1915 & 1916 as the Imperial German war machine rushed to equip the huge number of new troops. By 1917, ersatz bayonets were being withdrawn from service as sufficient quantities of regular bayonets and equipment were available. This pattern of ersatz bayonet has been designated under Carter’s classification as EB10.
The 317mm single-edged blade has a three-quarter length fuller below a flat spine with an 80mm upper edge. The blade terminates in a double-edged spear point. The spine bears a German inspection stamp. The ricasso also bears an inspection mark. The blade is in very good condition and retains its original length and polish.
The cast steel grip has a two-piece cross piece and muzzle ring. The grip is in good condition and retains patches of its original feld grau paint. The press-stud is in perfect working order.
The bayonet is complete with its original Fag made ersatz steel scabbard which also retains some feld grau paint. The bayonet sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.
This scarce EB10 bayonet is in very good condition for its age and service.
