German WW2 M1884/98 Bayonet
This example was made in 1944 by Alex Coppel of Solingen.
The 255mm single edged blade has a deep single fuller on both sides and is in excellent condition retaining its original blued finish. There are some very light scratches and scabbard wear to the finish. The blade is marked on the ricasso with the date ’44 (1944) and a three letter dispersal code “fnj.” After 1940, each maker was issued and required to use a dispersal code instead of their name and location. The fnj code is for Alex Coppel GMBH (Alcoso), Solingen. The obverse ricasso bears the stamp “5558” over “a.”
The steel pommel retains its original blued finish and is in excellent condition. The pommel bears two inspection stamps “WaA519” and “WaA518” both beneath the German eagle. The press stud mechanism is in perfect working order.
The wooden grip scales are in excellent condition.
The blued steel scabbard is in excellent condition and is dated 1943. The bayonet sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.
This is an excellent example of a late war production model 1884/98 Mk III Mauser bayonet.
