This is a great example of a high-status Zulu Iklwa with a huge blade. Many Zulu weapons were collected by the British troops and brought back to the UK as souvenirs after the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879.
The 496mm blade has a raised medial ridge. The blade is 59mm at its widest and is in good condition with shallow pitting and a pale (cleaned) patina that add to its character.
While the Zulu King was responsible for providing his warriors with shields, the individual Zulu warrior was responsible for his own weaponry. Given the size of the blade, this iklwa was probably the property of a senior member of Zulu society, an Induna.
The blade is secured firmly within the haft and a cow tail strengthens the bond. The cow tail is in good condition and has a great patina. The blade is firm in the haft.
The 712mm haft has a wonderful patina and large flare at the end.
This excellent high-status Iklwa will make a superb addition to any Anglo-Zulu War collection.
