This beautiful Scottish basket hilt was the property of an officer of the 74th Highland Regiment of Foot. In 1881, the regiment amalgamated with others under the Childers Reforms and became the Highland Light Infantry.

The ricasso bears faint maker’s details, from which it is possible to read the address, “St James, London.” The 74th Highland Regiment of Foot was stationed overseas almost continuously from 1851, and the broadsword blade bears the Royal cypher of Queen Victoria, who became queen in 1837, making it likely that this sword was produced in the 1840’s.

The 830mm double-edged blade is of fighting weight and retains its service edge. The blade is of typical form, with two narrow fullers on each side, tapering to a spear point. The blade is in good condition with minimal age related tarnish and is etched with panels of foliate scrollwork, Queen Victoria’s Royal cypher and the badge and motto of the Order of the Thistle, (Nemo Me Impune Lacessit – No-one attacks me with impunity) as well as the badge of the 74th Highland Regiment. The obverse ricasso bears a brass proof slug.

The heavy steel basket hilt is of traditional form and is in excellent condition with only minor tarnish. The ray skin grip is in good used condition and the twisted wire binding is tight.

The blade is firm in the hilt.
