This model 1860 cavalry sabre was produced in the U.S. for use by the Northern mounted forces during the American Civil War (1861-65).

Made by C. Roby, of Chelmsford, Massachusetts, the blade has a pronounced curve with a wide, slightly rounded spine (the 1840 model has a flat spine).

This sabre and its scabbard have survived in incredible condition due to having been coated with 19th Century varnish – a common practice during the Victorian age. Once the discoloured old varnish was removed, a near mint sabre and scabbard was revealed.

The single-edged Montmorency-style blade measures 885mm. The long, wide fuller begins with a flat line at the ricasso (in later models the beginning of the fuller is rounded). Within the broad fuller is a second very narrow fuller directly below the spine. The blade is in excellent condition with just a few tiny (almost unnoticeable) edge nicks. The ricasso bears the maker’s details, “C. Roby, W. Chelmsford. Mass(achusetts)” and the obverse ricasso is stamped, “U.S. 1864. A.G.M.”

The heavy, three-branch brass guard is in excellent condition. The original leather grip is in excellent condition and the twisted brass wire is intact and tight.

The heavy-duty steel scabbard has double suspension rings. The scabbard is in equally good condition. The sword sheaths and draws smoothly and is held firmly in the scabbard.

This is an excellent (as close to mint as it is possible to get) example of a US model 1860 sabre made by a top American maker during the Civil War.
