As you know, President Trump has decided that all USA citizens must pay import taxes on any items bought from overseas. He has withdrawn the $800 pre-tax allowance on imports and has also cancelled the exemption for antiques.
The amount of import tax payable is dependent on the country of manufacture of the item, NOT where it was bought/imported from.
For example,
The tariff on UK made items is 10% of the total amount, including the shipping fee.
On items manufactured in mainland Europe, the tariff is 15%.
Some countries incur a much higher percentage.
President Trump has insisted that these fees be paid BEFORE the item is imported, or the parcel will be refused entry into the US.
This basically means that Bygone Blades has to collect the US import tax from you and submit it to the carrier, who in turn pay the US customs.
After you have made your purchase, you will receive a separate invoice for the new import tax specific to the item purchased. This will need to be paid before your purchase is shipped.
This 1796 pattern infantry officer’s sword is a scarce un-fullered variant that was made and retailed by John Salter of London.
The 750mm single-edged, un-fullered blade has a flat spine that terminates in a spear point. Salter was renowned for making/sourcing bespoke fighting swords for the aristocracy. The wedge-shaped blade is stiffer than the regular fullered examples, improving its use in both the thrust and cut. The blade was service sharpened and is in very good condition with some small patches of cleaned, very shallow pitting.
The guard has a folding section to make wearing it more comfortable and to reduce wear to the officer’s uniform. The D-shape knuckle bow and urn pommel are decorated with an acanthus foliate design. The brass hilt and guard are in good condition although time and polishing have removed most of the original gilt finish. There is some small movement in the guard and the blade is firm in the hilt. The twisted wire on the grip is intact and tight.
The sword is complete with its black leather scabbard with brass mounts. The scabbard was in pieces when I bought the sword, so I have had a replacement made, to which are fitted the original brass fittings. The locket has both frog stud and suspension ring and is engraved to the rear with the cutler’s details; “J. Salter Sword cutler and jeweller. 35 The Strand, London.” The sword sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.
This Napoleonic Wars officer’s sword is a great example of a scarce bespoke British infantry officer’s fighting sword.
