This British 1821/56 pattern George V Royal Artillery officer’s sword has a service sharpened blade indicating that it saw service during WW1.

The 890mm blade is single edged with a flat spine over a three-quarter length single fuller. The blade terminates in a spear point and is double-edged for the final 250mm. The blade was service sharpened as required under general order in 1914 at the beginni9ng of World War One.

The blade is crisply etched with scrolled foliate panels above the winged lightning bolts with the words “Royal Artillery.” Above a field gun. The ricasso bears etched interlocking triangles containing the stamped word, “PROVED.”  The obverse of the blade is etched with similar foliate scrollwork above the rayed crown, Coat of Arms and cypher of King George V who reigned from May 1910 – January 1936. The forte of the blade bears the arms of the Royal Family. The ricasso is etched with the details of the cutlers, Watson & Gillott of Sheffield.

The blade is in excellent condition with only a few small spots of tarnish.

The three-bar guard is in great condition and retains its plated finish. The shagreen covered grip is in good condition. There is a small split in the grip at the base of the pommel. The split is stable and the grip is strong and tight. The three strands of wire binding are intact and tight. The blade is firm in the hilt.

The sword is complete with its brown leather covered scabbard with integral frog and strap. The scabbard is in good condition with some staining and scuff consistent with age and use. There is some creasing to the leather of the shoe. The sword sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.

This is a very good condition WW1 Royal Artillery officer’s sword.
