As you know, President Trump has decided that all USA citizens must pay import taxes on any items bought from overseas. He has withdrawn the $800 pre-tax allowance on imports and has also cancelled the exemption for antiques.
The amount of import tax payable is dependent on the country of manufacture of the item, NOT where it was bought/imported from.
For example,
The tariff on UK made items is 10% of the total amount, including the shipping fee.
On items manufactured in mainland Europe, the tariff is 15%.
Some countries incur a much higher percentage.
President Trump has insisted that these fees be paid BEFORE the item is imported, or the parcel will be refused entry into the US.
This basically means that Bygone Blades has to collect the US import tax from you and submit it to the carrier, who in turn pay the US customs.
After you have made your purchase, you will receive a separate invoice for the new import tax specific to the item purchased. This will need to be paid before your purchase is shipped.
British 1856 Pattern Saw Toothed Pioneer Sword. Modified Hilt. #2505003
The British military has had several patterns of saw-back bayonets but only one saw-back sword. The pattern 1856 infantry Pioneers’ short sword (hanger) was issued to the Pioneers within each infantry battalion. The primary use of the sword was for clearing ground for gun emplacements and widening trails. This example has a modified hilt, the knuckle bow having been removed, which improves the use of the sword as a saw and as a machete. Whether the modification was carried out during military service, or post service is unknown. It is possible that the knuckle bow broke during service in South Africa during the Boer War and was removed and the hilt modified for continued active service use.
The 574mm blade has 27 pairs of saw teeth, extending for 390mm from the ricasso. The blade is double-edged for the last 165mm and terminates in a spear point. The saw teeth remain very sharp and the blade retains its upper and lower service sharpened edges. The blade is in fairly good condition, with patches of cleaned pitting along the edges and at the point.
The ricasso is stamped with the War Department arrow, Wilkinson factory inspectors mark and a bend test X. The obverse ricasso bears a Wilkinson factory inspectors stamp and the date 8 ’00 (August 1900), above the maker’s details, Wilkinson, London.
The sword is complete with its Wilkinson-made, brass mounted leather scabbard. The scabbard is in good condition with crazing to the original finish. The leather is stamped with the War Department arrow and Wilkinson inspection mark as well as the date, 1896. The sword sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.
This is an interesting example of a scarce British Pioneers sword with a modified hilt that improves its handling.
