This is a rare Victorian 1857 Royal Engineer pattern, Submarine Mining Unit staff sergeant’s sword. Submarine mining was the term given to the defensive mining of harbours in the Victorian and early Edwardian eras. With their expertise in firing explosive charges underwater, the Royal Engineers became responsible for harbour defences and the laying of underwater (submarine) mines. The Submarine Mining Service became a very specialised field and was not incorporated into the Royal Navy until 1905.

This excellent sword was made in August 1890 by George Robinson & Co. of Birmingham, England.

The 825mm, slightly curved blade has a wide fuller on both sides below a flat spine. The blade has a 280mm upper false edge and terminates in a spear point. The blade is in excellent condition and is beautifully etched with a flaming grenade beneath a flamed trefoil arch, foliate scrollwork and winged lightning bolts with the words, “Royal Engineers.” The etching is completed by more foliate scrollwork above the long ricasso. The obverse of the blade bears another flaming grenade beneath a flaming trefoil arch, Queen Victoria’s crowned Royal cypher and below that, a banner with the motto, “UBIQUE” over a field gun. A second banner holds the Royal Engineers motto, “QUO FAS ET GLORIA DUCUNT.”

The long ricasso is etched with the maker’s details, G Robinson & Co. Sword Cutlers. 23 Loveday Street. Birmingham. The production date of 8/90 is stamped below. The obverse is stamped with the War Department arrow and WD above a Birmingham inspection mark. A Birmingham refurbishment stamp and a bend test X are also present. The spine of the blade is stamped with two inspection stamps. The blade is firm in the hilt.

The brass, acanthus leaf guard is in very good condition. The brass back strap has the crosshatched thumb rest and pommel characteristic of the Engineers pattern sword. The shagreen grip is in excellent condition and the three strands of copper wire are intact and tight. The rear of the quillon is stamped with the designation, V, over 5. S.M., over 1 and the issue date 9/1890. This designation reads; 5th (Humber Division) Volunteer Submarine Mining Unit, weapon number 1. The 5th Humber division was formed as a volunteer unit in 1886.

The sword is complete with its original, maker marked and unit designated steel scabbard. The top of the scabbard is engraved with the maker’s details, “Ge Robinson & Co. Birmingham.” The top ring band bears the designation V. 5. S. M. 1. and the obverse bears the production date, 8. 1890.

The shoe of the scabbard bears a Birmingham inspection stamp and the obverse bears a Birmingham refurbishment stamp. The scabbard is without dents or damage and has a great patina. The sword sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.

This is a great and rare example of a Royal Engineer Submarine Mining Unit staff sergeants’ sword.
