This is an excellent example of a late P1885 cavalry troopers sabre made in 1889 by Robert Mole of Birmingham.

The clean 87 cm / 34 ¼ inch blade is slightly curved with a single fuller on both sides and a flat spine with a 23 cm / 9 inch false edge. The single edged blade has numerous markings on the ricasso and spine, including the original date stamp for April 1889, maker’s mark, War Department broad arrow, inspection and acceptance marks, bend test and YC marks among others. The blade retains its point. Often the points were rounded when the sword was passed to the Yeomanry Cavalry.

The sheet steel guard is pierced with the Maltese cross and an oval for a sword knot. The guard is stamped “Mole.”
The riveted grips are firm and in good used condition.

The steel scabbard is the Mk 1 pattern with two fixed rings and is indistinctly marked on the throat with a “Y” over “SN” followed by “NTT” and a number ending “06” denoting its use by the South Notts Hussars.
The throat also bears the faint date stamp “87” and the letters “WD” and a broad arrow.

The sword and scabbard are in very good condition for their age and extensive service. The blade is clean and free from rust with only mild pitting on the point. The guard is firm and strong with pitting and a grey patina. The scabbard has suffered earlier rust which has been cleaned and treated but has left it with an uniform grey patina. The seam is good and there are no dents.

Please study the photos carefully. This is a great example of a rare British made cavalry sword.
