This sword is an excellent example of a scarce George V Royal Navy Master at Arms sword retailed by E. W. Cracknell of Portsmouth between 1906 and 1929. King George V reigned from 1910 until his death is 1936.

The 805mm single-edged blade has a broad, flat spine tapering to an upper false edge and spear point. A broad single fuller runs along both sides of the blade ending in a medial rib down to the point.

The blade is etched with a crown and the Royal Navy fouled anchor motif between rope bound oak leaves and acorns. The obverse of the blade bears the royal coat of arms used between 1901 and 1952. The blade is in near mint condition.

The ricasso bears the cutler’s details, E. W. Cracknell, Outfitter. Portsmouth. Erastus William Cracknell was a naval outfitter between 1906 and 1929. The obverse bears a proof stud showing a Fleur de Lys below the word PROVED.

The solid half-basket guard is in excellent condition. The bowl of the guard bears the Tudor crown and fouled anchor of the Royal Navy. The inner folding guard is in perfect working order and mates nicely with the pin on the scabbard. The back strap has a knurled thumb rest followed by a ridged section and ends in a domed oval pommel. The dark grey shagreen and the twisted copper wire are in good condition. The hilt is complete with its 1891 pattern bullion knot. The blade is firm in the hilt.

The brass mounted black leather scabbard is original to the sword and is in very good condition with small areas of loss to the original finish. The sword sheaths and draws well and is held firmly within the scabbard.

This is a very good example of a hard to find, WW1 period Royal Navy Master at Arms (Warrant Officer) sword.
