This French model 1845/55 NCO (Adjutant) sword was made after 1883. In 1883, army regulations changed, requiring just a single suspension ring on the scabbard instead of the double rings previously used.

The 770mm single-edged Montmorency style blade has twin fullers, one narrow immediately below the flat spine, the other broad and central. Both fullers run the full length of the blade, from just in front of the guard and on into the quill point. The blade is double-edged for the last 210mm.

The flat spine is stamped with a maker’s mark, showing a rapier/small sword hilt. The blade is in overall excellent condition.

The brass guard is richly decorated with pierced roses and laurels with a scroll quillon. The knuckle bow divides as it joins the capped pommel to allow for the addition of a port epee. The tang of the blade is peened in the centre of the oval pommel. The guard is in good condition with some use-related marks and dings. The rim of the solid half-front section of the guard is stamped with the serial number 17693 S. The ridged horn grip is in excellent condition though lacking its twisted wire binding.

The sabre is complete with its matching numbered, polished steel scabbard. The 1883 pattern single suspension ring scabbard is in good condition with small patches of shallow pitting on the lower half. The scabbard throat bears the matching serial number 17693 S. The sword sheaths and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.

This is a great example of a French 1845 pattern infantry officer’s sword.
