German Sabre German quill point sword Imperial German Army Pipe back sword German dove head sword German Imperial Quill Point Sabre #5 German Imperial Quill Point Sabre #6 German Imperial Quill Point Sabre #7 Quill Point Yelmen
This Imperial German sabre is something of a mystery. I am unsure as to exactly which pattern and branch of service it belongs. The variety of Imperial sword patterns was vast. Each branch of service had numerous patterns, as did the many volunteer, para-military and civil organizations.

The 695mm blade is of slightly curved pipe-back form. The blade is narrow, being 19mm at the ricasso. It is sturdy and was given a factory edge that shows some small nicks. The blade terminates in a needle sharp quill point with a pronounced yelmen. The ricasso bears the words “Deutsch Offiz Verein. Berlin,” which translates as “German Officer’s Club, Berlin.” This is the retailer’s mark and I have seen it before on an Imperial German army M1889 degen and on an S98/05 bayonet. The obverse ricasso is, as far as I can see blank, although any mark could be obscured by the languets.

The blade is in good condition with a pale age patina and a few small patches of very shallow pitting.

The brass stirrup hilt is unadorned and has a dove head pommel. The wooden grip is wrapped with grey shagreen and twisted wire. All strands of wire are intact and tight and the shagreen is in good condition. The blade is firm in the hilt.

The quality of Imperial swords is usually superb and even after a century, this sword remains in good, serviceable condition. This is a great sabre for any collector of German imperial swords and a blade style that is not often seen.
