This 19th Century Indian troop issue Tulwar has an impressive fighting blade.
The 690mm curved blade is un-fullered and has a flat spine. The blade is broad, measuring 38mm at the forte and has a large yelman. The blade is double-edged for the last 260mm and terminates in a hatchet point. The blade retains very sharp fighting edges.
The cast steel hilt has a baluster style grip and triangular languets. The hilt terminates with a disc pommel. The cross-guard has button finials and continues into a recurved knuckle bow.
The blade and hilt are in good, used condition. The cleaned hilt has casting marks and some minor pitting. These munitions grade tulwar were mass produced for issue to troops. The blade is firm in the hilt.
The wooden, leather covered scabbard is strong and intact with minor scuffs commensurate with its age. The stitching is intact and has a small repaired area towards the top. The tulwar sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.
This is a good example of a 19th Century Indian fighting sword.
