This late 18th Century Indian tulwar has a European blade. The blade has the profile of a 1788 light cavalry pattern blade.

The 788mm curved blade has a wide single fuller running almost to the hatchet point. The blade has a flat spine and is double-edged for the last 120mm, retaining sharp fighting edges.

The steel hilt has a baluster style grip, long languets and large pommel disk incorporating a dome with an urn finial. The cross guard continues into a recurved knuckle bow with a stylized animal terminal.

The blade and hilt are in worn condition, with pitting and speckled tarnish. The pitting has been cleaned and the blade and hilt are free from active rust. The pommel disk has vestiges of what appear to be maroon paint. The paint is clearly old but I don’t know whether it is period or not.

The blade is firm in the hilt.

This is an interesting Indo-Persian sword with a European (Firangi) blade dating to the late 18th Century.
