This model 1860 Heavy Cavalry sabre was made for the Italian army between 1860 and 1864 by Schnitzler & Kirschbaum (S&K) of Solingen, Germany.

The 895mm, slightly curved blade has a thick, flat spine over a broad single fuller and terminates in a spear point. The formidable blade is 31mm wide and is double-edged for the final 200mm. The edges were service sharpened.

The blade is in very good condition.

The ricasso bears the S&K stamp of Schnitzler & Kirschbaum.

The heavy-duty steel guard retains its original nickel plating. The guard is bright and clean with only tiny, scattered spots of tarnish. The hilt retains its original leather grip. The single strand of twisted brass wire is absent. The blade is firm in the hilt.

The sword is complete with its heavy-duty plated steel scabbard with twin suspension rings. The scabbard is in good condition and retains its plating. The sword sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.

This is a very good example of a mid-19th Century Italian heavy cavalry sabre sword. A beast of a sword.
