This very rare Highland Infantry field officer’s broadsword was made to commemorate the centenary of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother in the year 2000. Only 250 of these valuable swords were made by the Wilkinson Sword Company. This example is numbered 9/250. The Queen Mother was commander-in-Chief of the Black Watch from 1937 until her death in 2002.
The 820mm double-edged (broadsword) blade has a narrow central fuller and terminates in a spear point. The blade is in mint condition and is beautifully etched with scrolling thistles on a matt background. The ricasso bears the Wilkinson Sword Company details and Royal warrant. The obverse of the blade is similarly etched, with the ricasso bearing the letter W within radiating lines.
The Highland field officer pattern guard is made of solid Sterling silver and is hallmarked for London with the date letter for the year 2000. The pierced sterling silver guard is beautifully decorated with thistle flowers and leaves (the flower of Scotland) around the coat of arms of the Queen Mother and “Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother” and “Centenary Year 2000.” The guard is complete with its scarlet fronted leather liner with royal blue silk edging. The liner is held in place by two royal blue silk ribbons.
The grip is of black shagreen wrapped with twisted silver wire, with a chequered Sterling silver back strap and pommel.
The sword is complete with its silver-plated steel scabbard with two suspension rings. The scabbard is in mint condition.
This is a beautiful and very rare sword for a Highland field officer, commemorating the 100th birthday of the Queen Mother. They do not come onto the market very often.
