This is an excellent example of the scarce Swiss Model 1842 Pioneer saw back short sword or Faschinenmesser. The sword is of neo-classical gladius form popularised by the French sidearm that was itself inspired by the ancient Roman gladius. These saw backed swords were issued to Pioneer, Engineer and Machinegun units, intended for use as a tool for clearing ground, gun emplacements and fields of fire and also as a close quarter battle weapon.
The 505mm un-fullered blade has a single cutting edge and a saw toothed back with 60 sharp teeth. The blade has a 90mm upper false edge and terminates in a spear point. This is a heavy and formidable weapon with a sharp service edge. The blade is in very good condition with minimal age related marks and some speckles of pale tarnish towards the point. The blade retains its original leather washer.
The ricasso is stamped with a Swiss cross and the German maker’s details, Wester & Co. Solingen. The obverse ricasso is stamped with the issue number 19410 and the date 1890.
The cast brass hilt is of typical gladius form with thick, concentric circled disk finials to the cross-piece and a twenty-six ribbed grip. The tang is peened over the domed pommel button. The blade is firm in the hilt.
The gladius is complete with its brass mounted leather scabbard. The leather of the scabbard is thick and strong, retaining its original finish. The leather frog strap is intact and the sword sheathes and draws smoothly and is held firmly within the scabbard.
This is a great example of a scarce Swiss saw back gladius.
